The Maine, A Rocket To The Moon, This Century and Brighten Workplay Birmingham, AL 7/12/13

I finally get to see The Maine again! Yes! I had not seen The Maine since 2009 at Warped Tour and that was only for 10 minutes and I was in the back. Needless to say, I was excited to see them at Workplay, in a small room. The first band, or musician, rather, was called Brighten. Before I got to the show, I had no idea that he was the guitarist for A Rocket To The Moon and this was his side project. With that being said, I had never heard any of his music. He was very relaxing though, and funny. After him, was a band called This Century. I was so excited to finally get to see them. They played

Their singer, Joel, thought it was funny to say Roll Tide after every song. Personally, I enjoyed it, but it annoyed some people. That is their problem ;)

After TC, was A Rocket To The Moon (ARTTM). This was the first, and last time I would ever get to see them. They are breaking up after this tour and that is just depressing. They played

Then it was finally time for The Maine. The excitement was hardly containable from the crowd when the band walked on stage. They played

Before John played My Heroine he asked us if we had any questions. One girl asked for a song. When she did that, I raised my hand and John called on me. I asked for the song Everything I Ask For and he looked at the piano and sang, “She’s everything I ask for, everything I ask for… Was that good?” I gave him a thumbs up. Another girl asked if he liked Justin Bieber. He said he had nothing against the kid and he did not bother him and he said to think about if you recorded music when you were going through puberty and your voice sounded bad. And he also said he would like Bieber even more if he would give him $40-$45 million dollars and that would solve all of his problems. The guy behind me asked if he could get a high five and John told him he would do it after this song. (He did) And another girl asked him for another song. After we were done asking our questions John asked if Jenny from Brazil was here. There was no answer and he laughed and said “She was a sweet, nice girl, but when we played this song she stood right in the center and screamed every word to this song. It took everything I had in me not to laugh in the middle of the song.” *plays the song and stops in the middle of it* “and this is where I started to laugh. Sorry, Jenny”

When the rest of the band came back on stage after My Heroine, John made a comment about The Jonas Brothers and someone asked him if he had a favorite. He asked if there were three of them. Someone answered back and said that there were three in the band but they have a younger brother named Frankie. He said that Frankie would forever be his favorite Jonas and started cracking jokes about Frankie. Someone told him the oldest, Kevin, was expecting a baby and he said “I don’t give a shit about that. The media is stupid”

After their cover of Girls Just Wanna Have Fun, someone yelled GIRLS DO WHAT THEY WANT! Garrett (I think) said, “We can’t play two songs about girls back to back!” John said, “We will do this acapella.” He sang the chorus to us and that was enough for the crowd to applaud and laugh for five minutes.

During Count ‘Em 1, 2, 3… John and Garrett said they were going to run in place through the whole song without stopping. At the end, they were both out of breath and agreed that they were both out of shape.

During We’ll All Be, the last song, all of the bands that are on the tour ran out on stage and played with them and I swear it was so cool. Everyone on stage took turns playing the piano, singing, drumming and guitaring. 

And just like that, the show was over. All of the guys in every one of those bands should know, that if you ever need a back up career in the entertainment industry, be a comedian. Everyone that walked on stage that night found a way to make me laugh, whether it was intended or not.
