Two days after I saw Hanson at Workplay, I found myself
there again to see Pop Evil, Shallow Side, and Lynam. This show was a birthday
gift to me from me: something that I decided to do for myself because I had not
seen Pop Evil since 2011 and I wanted to see Lynam so bad, but I was never old
enough. Pop Evil's new album came out earlier this year and up until this
night, I had only seen them at festivals or big venues. This time, it was a
small venue and I was beyond thrilled. It was the day before my birthday, too.
The first band was Lynam. Their performance is something that everyone needs to
see once in their lifetime, regardless of whether you like the genre or not.

After Lynam's set, I went to their merch table to meet them.
They are literally some of the nicest guys I have ever met. I know that sounds
really cliche' but I speak nothing but the truth. They always take funny
pictures with the people they meet. I wish more bands did that. They all told
me happy birthday and I felt like the most special person in the world at that
moment.
The next band was called Shallow Side. They referred to
Lynam as their mentors and I thought that was cute. This part of the blog is
going to be short because I do not know anything about them nor do I know any
of their songs but they had a pretty loyal following.
The crowd was really hyped for Pop Evil. If Workplay was not
sold out, it was close to it. The energy in that room was stellar. When the
band came on stage, the drums were killer and the guitar was blaring. I knew
right then that this would be a damn good rock show. They played

Before Monster You Made, Leigh made a long speech about how
he would be cheering on The Crimson Tide on Saturday and he would be doing it
wearing his Big Blue Colors (He is a Michigan
fan). When he picked the Tide, the crowd mostly agreed, but there were a few
War Eagle fans (forget them). He then thanked us for being here on this
wonderful Monday night. We all looked at him in confusion and said it was
Wednesday. He freaked out and said "Are you fucking kidding me? I was just
watching my Blue beat the shit out of the Irish!" He then asked "What
day is it?" everyone yelled "HUMP DAYYYYY!!!" I still laugh
about that now as I type this. He went into a speech about how grateful he was
that we were here with them tonight because his favorite band, The Black Crowes
were playing a sold out show just across the street and we chose to be with
him. The smile on his face was priceless. He closed the speech on a serious
note reminding us that today was a day that needed to be remembered and that
the next song (Monster You Made) was dedicated to anyone who was affected by
the tragedy. It was a very meaningful tribute.
This show was totally one of the best birthday presents I
have ever given myself.
